Root Canals

Root Canal
We can often save your natural tooth if it's badly decayed and/or infected.

When your teeth are damaged the inside of the tooth can become infected. This can then have a bad effect upon the pulp of the tooth, i.e., the blood vessels and nerves inside. If you do nothing about this the infection can begin to damage the bone, causing pain and swelling. If this happens to one of your teeth, come see Dr. Koplon to determine the best endodontic treatment, such as Root Canal Therapy or a Tooth Extraction to save the tooth.

About Root Canals and Extractions

What is a Root Canal?

A Root Canal is a procedure that is conducted to save one’s natural tooth when a tooth is badly decayed and/or infected. Cracks and decay can cause infection in a tooth, resulting in the need for a root canal. Without a root canal treatment, you may be jeopardizing the tissue around the tooth and cause an abscess.
After a root canal, your pain and swelling will disappear, and will be able to chew normally
Your tooth will look natural
By retaining your own natural tooth, rather than having it replaced, your remaining healthy teeth will be protected from additional strain or wear and tear

Am I a candidate for root canal treatment?

While sometimes no signs or symptoms of infection are present, it is important to note specific symptoms that are paired with needing a root canal:

• Severe tooth pain when chewing or asserting pressure on area
• Sensitivity to hot or cool temperatures
• Swelling and tenderness in surrounding gums
• Drainage of the gums

What is a Tooth Extraction?

There are actually two types of tooth extraction. A simple extraction can be carried out if the tooth can be seen above the gum line.
A more complicated procedure is a surgical extraction. This occurs when the tooth is broken or hasn’t come through the gum.

Why do wisdom teeth often need extracting?

Wisdom teeth don’t normally appear until after all or most of an adult’s teeth have come through and sometimes there just isn’t enough room for any more teeth. This impedes the growth of the wisdom teeth and they can become impacted.

Impacted wisdom teeth can become infected or even damage the teeth next to them. If this happens then a dentist will recommend that the wisdom teeth are removed. This is often carried out by a surgical procedure, because wisdom teeth are often hard to access or under the gum line.

Illustration of Root Canal Therapy

When teeth are damaged the inside of the tooth can become infected. This can then have a bad effect upon the pulp of the tooth i.e. the blood vessels and nerves inside. If this happens to one of your teeth, Dr. Koplon may decide to carry out an endodontic treatment (Root Canal Therapy) in order to save the tooth. He will open and remove the damaged pulp and then clean up the inside before putting in a filling and adding a crown.
